Ice Cream Competition
The Greenway hosts the Cotswold’s regional heat of von Essen hotels’
Tuesday 20 July 2010

And you can help choose the winner!

The heat is on to find the von Essen signature Ice Cream this summer following the launch of von Essen hotels’ collection-wide Ice Cream competition during National Ice Cream Week in June.

Chefs at all properties were tasked with the challenge of creating a von Essen signature ice-cream that captures the spirit of the hotel or area in some way. The winner of the July regional heats will go through to the grand final, to be held at Hotel Verta, von Essen’s first new build and first London based property at the end of the month and the final winning ice cream is to feature on the menus of all 29 hotels across the country.

Each hotel has now selected its winning flavour and will compete against other hotels in the region in a von Essen hotel near you!

The Greenway, Cheltenham, will be hosting the regional finals for the Cotswolds on Tuesday, 20th July and invite the general public to pop in from 4pm to sample the competing ice creams and vote for their favourites. The Greenway will be offering complimentary Pimm’s for all those coming in to vote and with the help of judges, Chris Dee, Cotswold Tourism and Paul Bates, Cotswold Style, will announce the regional winner at 5pm.

Should you wish to make an afternoon of it, The Greenway will also be providing a special afternoon tea offer for those coming to vote!

Flavours competing in the regional heats include sticky toffee ice cream from the inventor of the famous pudding, Sharrow Bay; Lewtrenchard Manor in Devon has taken inspiration from its kitchen garden and has created Devonshire clotted cream with rhubarb and rosemary ripple ice cream and Amberley Castle, in West Sussex, is recreating its most popular dessert: Banoffee Pie ice cream, decorated with mini chocolate castles and fudge pieces.

James Parkinson, Executive Head Chef for the von Essen hotels Collection, says: “This competition is a fantastic exercise to further encourage the chefs and their teams to work creatively together and strive for excellence, whilst also capturing in a dish the individuality of each of their properties. It also helps the hotels to interact with those that matter most – their guests and local residents - who will essentially have the final say on which flavours will go through to the grand final! The teams have been working hard to develop a winning ice cream and we’re looking forward to rolling out the successful flavour to all von Essen restaurants.”

Places are limited so should you wish to participate in von Essen ice cream history, please book your “tasting place” early to avoid disappointment!
