History of The Greenway
The Greenway takes its name from the pre-roman path and used to mean ‘safe road’. It runs alongside the property and was used by farmers as a safe passageway through the Cotswold hills.
The first mention of The Greenway was when Robert Lawrence (1521-1584) owned the land and built the manor house. It is thought he inherited the land from his late father Sir Robert Lawrence. At this time, the property was known as The Little Shurdington Estate.
The Lawrence's migrated south from Lancashire where they where successful wool merchants. After the house was built, it began a long and interesting history. At one point after a succession of tragic deaths, William Lawrence planted the whole garden as a memorial showing the transition from birth through to death. The only remains of this garden are the old oak tree in the meadow and the Sunken Garden, which is still used today as a place of contemplation.
